The pieces at a glance
Each side commands 40 pieces. Rank decides most fights, but three special rules flip the math: only a Miner defuses a Bomb, the Spy beats the Marshal when the Spy attacks first, and equal ranks trade off. Full detail is on the Stratego rules page.

How a game plays out
You set up your 40 pieces across your four home rows, tucking the Flag behind Bombs. Red moves first, then players alternate, sliding one piece per turn into an empty square or onto an enemy to attack. Because ranks are hidden, every probe leaks information: a piece that moves cannot be a Bomb or the Flag, and a lost fight reveals what you were holding.
